A deadly alpine drama took place in Kals am Großglockner in East Tyrol on Monday evening. A 79-year-old hiker went off the trail during an evening walk to a cabin and fell into a stream bed. When he didn’t come home, relatives raised the alarm. The search team could do nothing more for the missing person.
The 79-year-old left unaccompanied for the evening tour on the Figerhorn hiking trail to the Lucknerhaus in Kals. At around 9:30 p.m., he called his relatives on his cell phone to tell them he had reached the cabin. After that there was no sign of life from the locals. His family members therefore informed the emergency services. At around 0:30 am, mountain rescue, helicopter and police started a search.
Wanderer was dead in the streambed
During the search, the hiker was eventually found dead in the streambed of the Ködnitzbach, police said. The researchers assume that the 79-year-old wandered off the steep terrain and then fell into the stream bed.
