The Speaker of the Parliament of Catalonia, Laura Borrasdefended his innocence before Parliament’s Table this Thursday, and left the sitting before deliberating and voting on his possible delay in office following the decision of the Supreme Court of Catalonia to send her to trial for alleged breach of contract when she headed the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes.
The vote at the table takes place after the PSC, ERC and CUP have asked Borràs to voluntarily withdraw in recent days. The above formations have warned that if they failed to do so, they would vote in favor of suspension, based on Article 25.4 of the ordinance, which obliges the council to suspend deputies on trial for crimes related to corruption.
However, Borràs has always maintained that he is innocent, that he would not resign and that he is a victim of “lawfare”, and has urged members of the board of directors to act “as democratic deputies with respect for fundamental rights.” and not as judges or inquisitors”.
In this context, the former President of the Generalitat Quim Torra went to Parliament to accompany Borràs, on the occasion of the table dealing with his suspension: “I am joining a person of integrity and dignity. She and I as deputies entered Parliament, we went out together when I was disqualified from the Palau de la Generalitat, and if it is suspended today we will leave Parliament together again,” she said in statements to journalists, stating that it hurts causes her to be accused of being corrupt.
