Schmid accusations “old” – Nehammer: “I have to lead the country through the crisis”

Date:

Thomas Schmid’s allegations against the “System Kurz” relate only to his successor in the chancery. Karl Nehammer apparently sees no need for action at the moment: The charges against ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz and others would “affect the past,” Nehammer said in a short written statement on Wednesday. “If these allegations are true, then that’s not okay,” Nehammer noted.

There are “now many concrete and vague statements by Thomas Schmid to many people in the room, the truth of which none of us can verify,” emphasized the ÖVP boss, who came to the top of politics under Kurz. “It needs full clarification now, which should be provided by the investigating authorities,” Nehammer said. “The judiciary must conduct these investigations carefully, I must lead the country through a crisis.”

For his own political work “transparency, clarity and enlightenment are the foundation,” Nehammer referred to reform steps that have already been taken, such as the new party law or the introduction of a new media transparency law.

Green: “The ultimatum to Kurz was right”
Vice-chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens), on the other hand, said that with the ultimatum given to then-chancellor and ÖVP leader Kurz to withdraw last fall, the right conclusions had been drawn. Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens) and he always said that the judiciary should be able to work in peace, Kogler said. They have now done so carefully.

Kogler appealed to the members of the National Council and especially the NEOS to expand the ÖVP’s Commission of Inquiry. Aspects that the criminal justice system may not have in mind can still be clarified there.

Ludwig: “Of course not nice”
Meanwhile, Viennese mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) has also called for complete clarification of the events described. The actions listed in the statement are “of course not fun,” he said in an interview with journalists on Wednesday. Ludwig was confident that extensive research would be done here. “I have the utmost confidence in the work of the judiciary.”

In general, however, such events do not just affect one party, “but the entire political system,” he said.
