Eight weeks before the election – in descent: Tyrolean ÖVP below 30 percent for the first time

Date:

This investigation will once again cause a stir within the Tyrolean People’s Party: a current IMAD investigation commissioned by “Krone” shows what the situation in Tyrol looks like almost two months before the state elections. The ÖVP is still at an all-time low and currently stands at just 29 percent. FPÖ and SPÖ battle for second place, Greens and Pinks are now tied.

The cards have been completely reshuffled! This is the result of the current IMAD survey commissioned by the “Tiroler Krone” on Tyrolean state politics. Things still don’t look good for the ÖVP: While it was 30.1 percent in our last survey — conducted June 20-23 — it’s currently just 29.1 percent. The FPÖ and SPÖ are battling for second place – although the current poll, held July 22-25, has turned “in favor” of the Reds.

The Greens, NEOS and Liste Fritz are also virtually unchanged from the June survey. The pink managed to gain almost one percentage point.

No new faces on the national blacklist
How does the political scientist see it? “There is still a downward trend in the ÖVP – albeit with the handbrake on. At 29 percent, it is still well behind the last state election result of 44 percent in 2018. The new, not really new faces on the lists were positioned around the state party conference, have not yet succeeded in giving voters a restart,” analyzes Professor Christian Traweger of the University of Innsbruck.

However, he notes that the results of the ÖVP poll in the last election were not great and a good result could still be achieved.

Conditions completely changed
However, according to the political expert, the preconditions have completely changed and so if all officials are strongly mobilized, a result of between 34 and 35 percent is likely to be judged as a great success. “However, it is questionable to what extent this mobilization will succeed, as some people and associations are not yet where they would like to be with their sensitivities. This is where Anton Mattle’s negotiating skills are put to the test internally,” explains Traweger.

SPÖ are missing the subjects and personalities
The SPÖ is stagnating at around 15 percent, there are still no clear problems and, according to Traweger, there are no competent team members around the SPÖ boss. Even the Greens can’t really make a profit around 12 percent right now. In any case, the recent election of the new leadership duo does not appear to be in favor of the Greens, at least in this study.

The NEOS are still on the rise and have also risen slightly by about 12 percent, which is also confirmed by the Fritz list, which is now more than 10 percent. The FPÖ currently stands at nearly 16 percent. The vaccine-critical MFG, which recently dreamed of ten percent and above, is only 2.5 percent and – like the KPÖ – is unlikely to reach the five percent threshold from today’s perspective.

Early state elections will be held in Tyrol on 25 September. From July 22 to 25, IMAD interviewed 600 people online and by phone for the “Tiroler Krone”. The fluctuation range is +/- 3.9 percent.
