The Spanish government’s defense minister says the new secrets law is “absolutely necessary” because it promotes “knowledge” and “transparency”.
The Spanish government’s defense minister, Margarita Robles, is in favor of allowing citizens access to the new Law of Secrets a documents that were previously confidentialsuch as those related to DELAY or affecting the attempted coup d’état of the 23-F.
During a visit to the Air Evacuation Medical Unit (UMAER), at Torrejón Air Force Base, Robles stated that the new classified information law promoted by the executive branch is “definitely needed” because the current one dates from 1968 and was a claim of NATO and the European Union.
In his opinion, it is good for society to learn about past facts such as: events related to the GALan issue in which she recalls herself being given the opportunity to work as a Secretary of State for the Ministry of the Interior in the 1990s.
“Help with knowledge, transparency”, he insists, advocating that the law can be reformed during the parliamentary process to unite the widest possible consensus. “All reasonable amendments will be accepted,” he said of criticisms already expressed by other parties.
The Minister has therefore urged to add support to this reform because: “responds to the essential principles of any democracy” and places Spain in “the parameters of other European countries”. However, he declined to go into detail about the possibility of reducing the number of years required to declassify documents.
