the portuguese Peter Pichardoworld and olympic champion triple jumphung the gold medal at the European Championships in Munich with a mark of 17.50 metersin a final where the Spaniards Marcos Ruiz finished fifth and Pablo Torrijos was disqualified for three nulls.
Pichardo, born in Santiago de Cuba and nationalized Portuguese in 2019, two years after his departure, showed his efficiency from the first jump, where he rose to 17.05 meters. In the second he went even further, to 17.50, a mark that ensured him the gold by a large margin over all his rivals. However, that 17.50 meters was a far cry from the 17.98 with which he achieved Olympic gold last year in Tokyo.
Silver at the European Championships in Munich went to Italian Andrea Dallavalle, fourth at the World Championships in Eugene, and bronze to Frenchman Jean-Marc Pontvianne with 16.94.
Very close to the medals is the Valencian Marcos Ruiz. Four years ago, in Berlin, he was tenth, and in Munich, with 16.78, he finished fifth.
The one who doesn’t have a choice is Pablo Torrijos. In his fourth European, and fourth final, he was disqualified after making three failures in the first three jumps.
