The front of Chelsea, Sam Kerrand the defender of Manchester City, Alanna Kennedy, was summoned to the selection of Australia for two games against the Olympic champion Canada in September, in matches that will begin the final stage of preparation for the ‘Matildas’ for the World Cup on home soil next year.
Kerr, Kennedy and Arsenal pair Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord are among the senior Europe-based players included in the 23-player squad called up after being rested for games against Spain and Portugal in June. Kerr scored 59 goals in 110 appearances for Australia and is one of the undisputed stars of women’s football worldwide. Veteran forward Kyah Simon was not called up to play against Canada in Brisbane on September 3 and Sydney on September 6 as he continues to recover from an Achilles tendon injury.
“I’m very, very excited to finally get that team back together. Then playing against the Olympic champions of Canada… it will be a good game for us”, said ‘Matildas’ coach, Tony Gustavsson. “There is confusion around the pool of players selected for the next 11 months before the World Cup on home soil.
Canada defeated Sweden in the Olympic final in Tokyo last year. Gustavsson will have his best team in camp and they will be together for the first time since April.
