Spanish tennis player Rafa Nadal will play an exhibition match in Quito on Sunday, November 27, with an opponent yet to be determined, as part of a tour the Majorcan athlete plans to undertake in Latin America.
The match will be held at the Rumiñahui Coliseum, as the end of a series of activities that Nadal will carry out in two days in Quito, former Ecuadorian tennis player Nicolás Lapentti, organizer of the event, announced on Wednesday at a press conference.
Nadal’s visit to Quito will be similar to the one Swiss tennis player Roger Federer made in 2019, when he faced German Alexander Zverev in an exhibition match, also in the Ecuadorian capital.
In a video shown at the press conference, Nadal said he was excited about visiting Ecuador for the first time.
“The Latin American public has always welcomed me and it will be special for me to visit this country for the first time,” Nadal said.
“I would love to have more time to visit the country in the future. We will leave the Galapagos Islands for the next one. I hope the day of the match will be an unforgettable day,” he concluded.
Among the candidates to rival Nadal are several “top-level” tennis players, including Argentine Diego Schwartzman, but this has not yet been determined as most of them are pending to determine their participation in the final round of the Davis Cup, which was contested on both dates, according to Lapentti.
The former Ecuadorian tennis player explained that talks to organize this exhibition match began in December 2019, but with the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic they were paralyzed until they resumed in November 2021.
“It is really a great pleasure to confirm that next Sunday, November 27, we will have here in Quito, nothing more and nothing less, than Rafael Nadal, who is now considered the best tennis player in history, for the titles. of grand slams and for his whole resume,” said Lapentti.
Tickets for this meeting go on sale from August 29 and range from $100 to $825.
In addition to the match, during Nadal’s stay in Quito, the winner of 22 Grand Slam titles, including 14 Roland Garros, will give a press conference, give a tennis master class to the sponsors of the event and visit an emblematic place in Quito, still to be defined.
The mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas, wishes that the visit of the tennis player from Manacor to the capital of Ecuador could exceed the economic impact that Federer had in 2019, which was able to generate 3 million dollars for the city.
“I think it is very important that, after the pandemic, which unfortunately brought illness and unemployment and the closing of establishments, we can have first-class events,” said Guarderas.
Nadal is currently in full preparation for the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, which starts next Monday, August 29. EFE
