The Premier League has surpassed its record spending on transfers

Date:

A week before the end of the market, the Premier League has surpassed its record spending on transfers, as revealed on Thursday by financial firm Deloitte.

The 20 clubs in the English championship have invested 1,500 million pounds (close to 1,800 million euros) so far in reinforcements, surpassing the 1,400 million pounds (1,700 million euros) which was a record since 2017

“The level of spending seen during this summer’s transfer window suggests that the business model of Premier League clubs has recovered post-COVID,” said Chris Wood, deputy director of sporting affairs at Deloitte. .

“While this is encouraging, the importance of clubs following responsible and sustainable spending policies cannot be understated,” said Wood. “Clubs must balance their desire to be competitive on the pitch with the need to protect their long-term financial viability and stability.”

Especially last season

The 1,800 million euros spent since June 10, the date of the official opening of the market, has already exceeded the accumulated investment during the summer and winter transfer windows last season (1,710 million euros).

This amount will still increase between now and the closing of the market on September 1 and could reach an absolute record for a full season in the Premier, established in 2017-2018 with 2,200 million euros in signings in two windows.

So far, 135 players have been signed by Premier League clubs, more than in 2019 and 2020 and close to 148 in 2021.

A third of these players were signed without paying a transfer fee, but 14 of them cost more than 35 million euros.

Darwin Núñez, the dearest

The most expensive signing was that of Darwin Núñez, who went from Benfica to Liverpool for 75 million euros and 25 in variables. Manchester United paid Real Madrid 71 for Casemiro, while, in the absence of an official announcement, Newcastle will include Alexander Isak, from Real Sociedad, for 70.

Marc Cucurella followed them with 65 ‘kilos’ invested by Chelsea to sign him from Brighton.

Manchester City signed Erling Haaland after paying the 60 million euro termination clause of his contract with Borussia Dortmund. In contrast, the ‘citizens’ entered 56 for the transfer of Raheem Sterling to Chelsea.

Richarlison (Everton) cost Tottenham 58 million and Arsenal allocated 88 in the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandar Zinckenko, from City, for 52 and 35 respectively.
