The Palacio de los Deportes de Murcia is an ‘oven’ and already has its first victim

The Spanish Chess Championship has made the leap. The Palacio de los Deportes de Murcia, like many municipal sports facilities, is an oven. The air conditioning of the largest capacity pavilion in the Murcia region broke down before the start of the summer and continues without being repaired. There are good days when sometimes it seems to work but normally it doesn’t even respond. Both UCAM and ElPozo ended last season stifled by the heat and started this season in the same conditions.

And what was feared might happen finally happened. At UCAM they started last pre-season and the team of physical trainers and physiotherapists found the players to be worse than expected, repeatedly resorting to hydration. Between the double sessions so typical of the preseason and the stifling heat of a city that becomes inhospitable for two months a year, center Ilimane Diop, one of the new faces of the team, fell victim to heat stroke last Friday.

At about ten o’clock in the evening, just after the second practice of the day, the Spanish-Senegalese began to feel unwell. So much so that he not only became dizzy, but was also completely dehydrated and had to be hospitalized. He was admitted that same Friday and spent the night at the Ibermutuamur clinic until he was discharged the next day, on Saturday, around 3 p.m.

With no training on Saturday and Sunday, UCAM resumed training this Monday, with Diop, like his teammates, training as normally as possible. Complaints from the players follow one after the other and the coaching staff have had no choice but to take their foot off the accelerator and reduce the physical strain of the sessions in a week when the practice matches begin, the first this Friday in Valencia against Gran Canaria .

Both UCAM and ElPozo planned to change their training routine for the celebration of the Spanish Chess Championship, between August 30 and September 4 at the Palacio de los Deportes… initially. It was when all the infrastructure for the celebration was set up when the championship organizers, taking a look at the podium the day before, warned of the extreme heat. There were complaints to the authorities and the José María Cagigal was urgently found for the change of location.

It is exactly where ElPozo Murcia had transferred his training to avoid the heat of the palace. Those of the basketball only changed the central lane for help. The parquet floor of the Príncipe de Asturias is too hard and it is feared that this increases the risk of injuries. In any case, neither team’s league premieres are in danger, as they are set for September 23 and 29, respectively, when a significant drop in temperatures is expected.

Meanwhile, it’s time to weather the downpour. They are no better in the offices either. UCAM employees pull fans and a portable air-cooling console, but there are days when the excessive heat forces workers who can afford it to opt for telecommuting.
