The Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Thursday suspended the matches of the local tournament organized this Friday, as a result of the attempted gun attack against the Argentine vice president, Cristina Fernández, according to official sources.
“The Argentine Football Association expresses its strongest rejection of what happened to the Vice President of the Nation, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner,” the AFA reported in a brief statement on Twitter.
On Thursday night, a man was arrested in Buenos Aires after trying to shoot Fernández, around his home, during a vigil in his support.
“All matches scheduled for today (September 2) have been suspended,” added the entity that brings together all the soccer teams in the South American country.
According to police sources, the detainee is a person of Brazilian nationality in possession of a Bersa 32-caliber automatic weapon, which, on its base, has a partial numbering of 250, suitable for firing.
Photos taken by the local press recorded the moment where the suspect pulled out a gun in front of the face of the former president (2007-2015) and tried to shoot him twice before being stopped by Fernández’s custody.
“We make an appeal to society as a full warning that violence of any order is never the way,” closed the official statement from the AFA.
