The Spanish Garbine Muguruzawho was eliminated this Saturday in the third round of US Open. After wasting two match balls, he made sure he leaves with a bitter taste and appreciates that he competed at a high level despite the final result.
“I don’t have things to reproach myself for,” Muguruza said at a press conference, admitting that she was “disappointed” to bid farewell to the tournament but was “happy” with how she was “looking on court.”
“I feel empty now, I’ve given everything. I don’t feel sad. Annoyed, yes, but not sad,” she argued.
Muguruza bows out of US Open 2022 after beating Czech 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6 (10) in two hours and 39 minutes Petra Kvitova in a match in which he has two match points over the other and in which he also has one service to take the match.
In a disappointing season with many setbacks, Muguruza, number ten in the WTA, rediscovered her best tennis in the last Grand Slam of the year, but finally fell to Kvitova, number 21 in the world ranking, after a very tight and exciting.
“It was a very tough game. I left everything on the court. I had my chances,” he explained.
“I’m proud of my fighting spirit. I’ve had some tough losses this year but this one definitely made me feel like my fighting spirit and tennis were there,” he said.
Regarding the two match points she couldn’t determine, Muguruza said she probably needed “extra security” to determine those moments.
“And for not playing too many games (this year), I felt it a little bit. I think he reached a final (Cincinnati, in August) so I had a lot of security (…). But yes, overall, I’m happy with what I showed on the track,” he said.
