With the group stage starting tomorrow, UEFA will start applying the new semi-automatic offside technology (SAOT) to the Champions League. The European body pioneered this innovative method in the Super Cup final which Real Madrid won on August 10 against Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.
It’s a proposal where UEFA seeks to be more accurate in detecting offside and where a selection of cameras will detect players’ movements and more accurately capture their position at the time the previous pass was made. The sensor inside the ball will send a signal with data to the VAR room.
“There are between 10 and 12 cameras that detect 29 points on the player’s body, 50 times a second, and the software analyzes the data in real time, perfectly calculating the timing of the pass and the position of the players . is sent to the VAR station, with the answer to give the referee in cases of offside goals,” said former international referee Pierluigi Collina and current refereeing director of FIFA.
However, the final decision rests with the main referee, especially since the offside rule itself prohibits fully automating its application.
