The number 1 seed, Iga Swiatek overcomes poor start to beat Jule Niemeier 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 and reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time.
The Pole will face Jessica Pegula, who eliminated two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova6-3 6-2 to reach his third major quarterfinal in 2022.
Swiatek enters the US Open just 4-4 in his last eight matches after winning 37 straight, but has yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows on Monday.
Niemeier was first on the scoreboard, while urging the crowd to turn up the volume, and try to pull off another Grand Slam upset. At Wimbledon she eliminated No.2 seed Anett Kontaveit.
Swiatek stabilized in the second set and hit 10 winners, and made the third set a loss. The Pole became the first Pole to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open and is looking to become the first seed to win it since Serena Williams in 2014.
Another top quarterfinal will be played by Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Pliskova. The sixth-seeded Belarusian recovered from a shaky start to beat 19th-seeded Danielle Collins 3-6 6-3 6-2.
He was leading 4-3 in the second set when he needed a medical timeout. Sabalenka had her left thigh massaged by a coach and continued with breaks in the match.
Sabalenka, an Open semifinalist in 2021, said in her on-court interview that she was doing well.
Her rival for a place in the semifinals is Karolina Pliskova, winning 7-5, 6-7 (5) and 6-2 against 26th seed Victoria Azarenka. Pliskova, a former world number 1, was runner-up at the US Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2021.
