Jannik Sinner, the 11th seed, defeated the struggling Ilya Ivashka to win their US Open match 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 for a place in all four of this year’s Grand Slam quarter-finals.
The Italian, who turned 21 in August, became the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in a season since Novak Djokovic was 20 in 2007.
Sinner trailed 3-1 in the fifth set but recovered to win five straight games to eliminate the Belarusian player.. Sinner earned 12 break points in the match and struggled in the fifth, showing why the rising Italian is considered a rising star.
Sinner joins Matteo Berrettini as the Italians reach the quarterfinals of the US Open. He will play Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Marin Cilic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in an epic match.
