The changes coming to Formula 1 from 2026 to favor the show

Date:

Formula 1 It is a sport that never stops developing. hThere was a regulation change in 2022 and in 2026 there will be another pending the whole paddock so as not to fall behind the competition. More and more is known about what the cars of the future will be and where the ‘Great Circus’ is headed. Nicholas Tombazisthe FIA’s head of single-seaters, explained some of the goals proposed.

One of the big debates that exists is about the possibility that the engines are 50% electric and the other half run by combustion. “It is said that the energy management of the new unit will not meet the needs of the car, but these are premature comments. We will have less power in the combustion engine, from 750 HP to 540 HP and we will increase the electric from 200 HP to 470 HP. So the total power of the vehicle will increase. It is true that, in the current car, energy will be consumed on straight roads. We want drivers to go to the limit at all times, when braking and on straight roads, so that there is no ‘lift and coast’,” Tombazis explained in remarks reported by AS newspaper.

On the other hand, one of the elements that has been key in recent years is the DRS. Without him, much of the overtaking that has happened in recent seasons would not have been possible. However, its application is criticized because drivers can only overtake in a straight line and have no option to compete for position for a long time.

“There will be an equivalent of the current DRS to follow another car and be able to attack. The form of that mechanism has not yet been determined. If it is a change in an aerodynamic component on the straights, in the corners or in the energy system, we are still discussing. There are several options on the table, we are trying to choose the best. But We don’t want cars that cruise effortlessly down straight roads, we want them to get close to the braking point.”.

Loss of speed and aerodynamics do not worry

From 2017, the cars that form the Formula 1 grid are characterized by being the fastest in history. However, they had setbacks such as excess weight or the pilots not being able to follow each other closely due to aerodynamics. In this sense, Tombazis proposes a series of changes to alleviate these deficiencies.

It will be a shorter car, 3.4 meters (now, 5.6) and narrower- Lighter too, we want to reduce the mass between 40 and 50 kg. In recent years, cars were too heavy. To alleviate them, downforce is greatly reduced and air resistance is greatly reduced. In terms of lap time, which is not a factor that we consider a lot, I think it will be very close to the current one. Maybe a few seconds slower (per lap), or something like that. But Even if they were five seconds slower, we wouldn’t be too worried.”

The final regulations will not come out until the middle of next season and the teams cannot work now towards 2026. Of course, the expectation is highest to know which team best adapts to the changes that promise movements on the grill.
