Mark Alonso Penafather of the Barça player Mark Alonso, He passed away today, Thursday, February 9, at the age of 63 after a long illness. Born on October 1, 1959 in Cantabria and the son of fellow international player Marcos Alonso Imaz ‘Marquitos’, he was a player for Barça between 1982 and 1987 and also for Atlético de Madrid for two periods.
Marcos Alonso Peña played as a winger for 13 seasons in the Spanish First Division and was capped 22 times. He made his First Division debut with Racing Santander on September 25, 1977. He played for the Cantabrian team for two seasons.
His speed, technical quality and dribbling led him to sign for Atlético de Madrid. After three seasons with the rojiblanco and making his international debut, he joined Barça for five seasons, a club where he won the League, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup and two League Cups.
Many Barça fans remember him for the goal scored against Real Madrid in the last minute of the 1983 Copa del Rey final played in Zaragoza. After his time at the Barça club, he returned to Atlético. His last campaign in the First Division was with Logroñés, although he played with Racing in Segunda B to help the Cantabrian team rise and end his career as a player.
Marcos Alonso continued his professional career as a coach, first as Jorge D’Alessandro’s assistant at Atlético Madrid. In 1995 he signed for Rayo Vallecano, thus beginning a phase that led him to manage Racing de Santander, Sevilla and Zaragoza in the First Division, among others.
