Alonso will increase the legend in conquered territory

Date:

The Spaniard will match Räikkönen in Monza as the driver with the most Grand Prix races in Formula 1 history

The cliché ‘temple of speed’ is too cheerfully and too often misused in Formula 1. Few circuits can honor that name, and the one that certainly can is Monza. The legendary circuit north of Milan is hosting its 100th race this weekend – races were held here before F1 existed as such – and will also serve as the flying finish line for the Grand Prix triplet that started in Belgium, passed through the Netherlands and will end in central Italy. Those who know the history of the Spanish Empire of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries will smile at the sight of this trip.

An emperor of Formula 1, at least to the average Spanish fan, is Fernando Alonso, and what better way to crown another milestone in his career than at home, where he was once very happy. The oldest rider on the starting grid in terms of age (41 years) will match the number of 350 Grand Prix races, a milestone Kimi Räikkönen only had so far. The record, which will remain in Alonso’s hands from the next race in Singapore, is nothing special for him… or so he says.

“It’s a good performance and of course it’s great to tie Kimi for most Formula 1 races. Honestly I try not to think too much about the records and keep my focus,” he says of “a great performance” that he will remember. for a while. In a few years’ time, when his contract with Aston Martin expires, Alonso will place the new dispute ceiling in the first category of motorsport. According to his own words, that will be in at least two years.

If Alonso lands on the primary target, he will try to keep his run of points. He joked in Zandvoort about that promise he made to himself months ago in Barcelona when he said he would score points in ten consecutive races. He has achieved it and now he wants more. Few circuits are better than this one, where the very high speed (it is no coincidence that several teams expressly wear a unique rear wing for this race) and the very strong braking (the first chicane is not suitable for cowards) can give many joys or many dislikes, depending on who and how they are taken.

Ferrari is going to catch its breath in Italy after the embarrassing result of Zandvoort. With Carlos Sainz still hurt by that pit stop that sparked a volcano of ‘memes’ on the networks, the Scuderia are racing at home and in front of thousands of tifosi who want to see their gladiators at the top. The atmosphere that always reigns in the Monza stands could become a rival for the men commanded by an increasingly questioned Mattia Binotto, who knows there is much more at stake than a race in the coming days.

In addition to sports, Ferrari wants to celebrate its 75th birthday at home with a special decoration that defies superstition. The yellow ‘giallo’ of the coat of arms of Modena, birthplace of ‘Commendatore’ Enzo Ferrari, dominates the upper part of the two Scuderia single-seaters, whose drivers will also wear suits of this colour. Traditionally related to bad luck, they have proudly brought home from Maranello to try and end the string of failures that has haunted them for several races. You just have to see how they present themselves, with Mercedes lurking in the Constructors’ World Cup and Charles Leclerc (last winner in red here, in 2019) on points with a more than discreet Sergio Pérez.

There is nothing for it but to improve and above all to be proud. Carlos Sainz has it clear. “I’m fighting for Ferrari, in Monza, with a competitive car. It is something that should be appreciated much more, much more enjoyed. That’s my goal and then we’ll see how the weekend goes, how the car behaves and everything else. I’m going to try and focus a bit more on that approach,” he said in the days leading up to a very stressful weekend.
