The world team achieved victory also thanks to the specific scoring system of the tournament, which gives more points for each victory as the days progress, one on Friday, two on Saturday and three on Sunday.
With five wins and three losses in eight games played, Europe entered the final day with an advantage (8-4), but what seemed like a good lead was buried by three world wins and an 0-9 record in doubles. Felix Auger-Jack Sock against Matteo Berrettini-Andy Murray (2-6, 6-3, 10-8), Auger himself to Novak Djokovic (6-3, 7-6) and the aforementioned Tiafoe against Tsitsipas. From 8-4 to 8-13.
If the Greek beats Tiafoe, Europe keeps their chances of winning and the Norwegian alive Casper Ruud and the american Taylor Fritz they would have played the last game with the title at stake. However, Tsitsipas suffered from nerves late in the match and missed several good chances to seal the victory and continue the fight for the Laver Cup.
After clearly surrendering the first set (1-6), Tiafoe entered through the door that the Greek opened for him in the second, he managed to save four match points in the tiebreak before scoring it 13-11 and then proved the victory and the title, also won the playoff super tiebreak (10-8) that replaces the third heat in the Laver Cup.
The point of the tournament? 😱😱
👏👏 Exceptional shot by Frances Tiafoe when it seemed impossible for her to reach Tsitsipas’ dropshot#LaverCup2022 pic.twitter.com/8CQ5oThTQE
