The family of Belfast boxer Stephen McMullan releases an update on his path to recovery

Date:

Belfast boxer Stephen McMullan’s sister said she was “doing an amazing job” on her way to recovery.

In early December, the 25-year-old heavyweight was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital after falling ill on the second day of the Ulster Elite Final.

Stephen did not need medical attention after the heavyweight final when he defeated Moontown’s Charlie Boyle at Provincial Solutions at the Girdwood Community Hub.

He spent five weeks in the intensive care unit before being transferred to the stroke unit.

In a recent social media post, Stephen’s sister Claire said she is now breathing on her own and is no longer seriously ill.

He wrote: “Wow, what can I say after 16 weeks. My brother Stephen McMullan is breathing completely alone: the tracheostomy was removed today and it works amazing and not as seriously ill as today.

“We’re definitely on the moon and that too. It’s come a long way. Now he’s waiting on the bed for the next Masgrave flight. This guy is awesome. He’s mad at the doctors and keeps on doing it. Thanks for all the prayers. We’ve worked on it again.”

Stephen’s friend Amy Fitzsimmons also spoke of her pride in her progress today: “He’s come this far. Today is a big step and a well-deserved move for him because he didn’t get a break!”

Stefano’s cousin, Maria Კ to Three months ago, he opened a fundraising page in which he hopes to raise at least 5,000 public donations, but so far the donations have exceeded 11,000,000.

The money will be used for Stephen’s intensive rehabilitation, as well as a computer system for eye care that allows him to communicate with others.

Any money not used in Stephanie’s recovery will be donated to the Intensive Care and Stroke Unit at Royal Victoria Hospital.

In February, Belfast boxers past and present embarked on a charity tour for their comrades-in-arms where Stephen’s family encouraged people to walk 20 miles that month to raise awareness of his condition and help raise funds.

A charity football between Patrick Pearce’s GAC and Ard Eoin Kickhams’ GAA was also held in January at Cliftonville Play Fields.

If you’d like to donate to the Stephen Foundation’s tourism page, you can do so here.
