Nearly 3,000 deaths due to Covid-19 were added to official UK data after an error was discovered in the data. The cumulative number of people who died within 28 days of being positive for the coronavirus rose by an additional 2,714 on Wednesday, in addition to the 233 new deaths reported.
This means that the total number of deaths in the UK within 28 days of testing positive is now 169,095. Britain’s Health and Safety Agency said that “due to an error in the processing of data, many people who died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 were not reported in a timely manner.”
The 2,714 deaths, which have all occurred in England this year, were added “retroactively” to the government’s coronavirus commission on Wednesday night. The revision of the data slightly underestimates the difference between the number of deaths required by the government based on people who died within 28 days of testing positive and the number of people who recorded Covid-19 on a published death certificate. from the National Bureau of Statistics and currently totaling over 190,000.
Both measures of deaths from Covid-19 showed a slight increase in the number of daily deaths in the UK in recent weeks, reflecting the increasing impact of infections caused by the Omicron BA.2 variant. However, the number of daily deaths is far below the level reached during the first and second waves of the virus.
