A visually impaired man fell on the railway track of Schottenring metro station on Wednesday – despite using a blind stick – and was hit by an oncoming train.
An incredible tragedy is currently shaking the capital. Despite an emergency stop, the driver could no longer avoid a collision, as announced by the Wiener Linien. The rescue workers could only determine the death of the approximately 55-year-old.
The man therefore wanted to take the metro towards Schottentor at 15:25. On the way to the platform he oriented himself along the wall. “For reasons that are still unclear, the man fell onto the track section at the end of the platform despite using a stick,” according to Wiener Linien. There he was hit by the metro. The train driver went into shock in the evening and was treated by an internal crisis intervention team.
Follow the changing activities between Schottenring and Taborstrasse stations
For the duration of the rescue operation, a track switching operation was set up between the Schottenring and Taborstrasse stations. The U2 Schottenring station was not observed.
Pull the train’s emergency stop immediately!
Wiener Linien emphasized that all Wiener Linien metro stations are equipped with a tactile orientation system that can be felt with a blind stick. Wiener Linien also made an urgent appeal: “If passengers see someone falling on the track, immediately pull the emergency stop of the train on the platform. This rapid reaction can save lives.”
