Search for missing persons – four people buried in an avalanche in East Tyrol

Four people died in an avalanche in Kartitsch in East Tyrol on Wednesday afternoon. Three have now been rescued unharmed and the search is still ongoing for the missing fourth winter sports enthusiast.

The fresh snow of recent days in East Tyrol has now caused a first tragic incident in Kartitsch. Four people were buried in the open area in an avalanche on Wednesday around noon. As the control center announced at the request of the “Krone”, at first one person could be excavated unharmed. Two others have since been recovered. “One person is still buried, this is currently being searched for.”

Mountain rescue in action
It is not yet clear what condition the other two victims are in. In addition to the Libelle Tirol and two rescue helicopters, the mountain rescue services Obertilliach and Sillian are also deployed with dog squads. Increasing fog also makes flying conditions more difficult. More information about the exact course of the avalanche is not yet available.

Fresh snow increased the danger
The avalanche warning service of the state of Tyrol warns of the current risk in its report and sets the risk at “level 3 – significant”: “The fresh and somewhat older snow accumulations can be activated by individual winter sports enthusiasts at all exposures, especially in the area of ​​the tree line and above the tree line. Some of these dangerous places are covered in snow.”
