Joshua Tarling completed a British gold double in the junior individual time trial races in the men’s event of the World Road Cycling Championships in Wollongong (Australia) which Zoe Backstedt opened this Tuesday in the women’s event.
Tarling, silver in 2021 and the last rider to start, confirmed his old favoritism by winning the 28.8-kilometre course around Wollongong’s twisty and technical street circuit in a time of 34 minutes and 59 seconds.
The British, Welsh as Backstedt, outclassed his rival with authority from the first reference and in the end he passed the Australian Hamish McKenzie, the best time for most of the race, and the German Emil Herzog by 19 and 33 seconds, respectively.
Tarling’s gold was his country’s third medal of the championships, following bronzes by Backstedt and Leo Hayter in the under-23s. As in the previous junior girls’ race, the Spanish performance was more than discreet because the Valencian Pau Martí finished in 42nd place out of 52 participants, 4.31 behind Tarling.
Colombian William Colorado fared much better, finishing twenty seconds, 2.28 behind the new world champion, and Panamanian Hassan Felipe Chan, forty-four, also beat Martí, 4.25 behind. of the winner.
