Peruvian police have found the body of an Italian tourist who has been missing for 80 days in the Andes. Police believe the 30-year-old was killed in a landslide, according to a statement issued Monday. The Italian started hiking from the town of Urubamba in the Cusco region in early July and never returned.
A friend reported the young man missing. After 80 days, a mountain patrol finally discovered the man’s body in the mountains after a tip from locals. According to the Andina news agency, a photo of the Italian’s identity card and his mobile phone were found in the jacket pocket of the corpse.
About 50 kilometers north of Cusco, Urubamba is a popular stopover for tourists on their way to the world-famous Inca city of Machu Picchu.
