3-0: Scotland give Ukraine no options and let them take the lead

Date:

Scotland defeated Ukraine at Glasgow’s Hampden Park (3-0) and dropped them from the top of Group 1 of League B of the Nations League. A goal from Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn vindicated Steve Clarke’s selection and allowed him to go into the final two qualifying games with a two-point lead.

If on Friday Ukraine wins their visit to Joaquín Caparrós’ Armenia and Scotland do so against Ireland in Glasgow, both teams will play for first place and, consequently, promotion to League A in the match who will face them on September 27 in Krakow.

Three months after the playoffs

Scotland and Ukraine meet again at Hampden Park after a 1-3 draw in the play-off semifinal for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Now the British have avenged that bitter defeat thanks to their total superiority in the second half.

Ukrainian players jumped onto the field of play each wrapped in a flag of their country, continuing to suffer the consequences of the Russian military invasion.

Trubin resists

The minute’s silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II gave way to a balanced first half, although some occasions came from the Scottish side. Che Adams in a great individual action (11′) and Stuart Armstrong (20′) put Anatolii Trubin to the test, but his centered shots did not faze the Ukraine keeper.

After the restart, Scotland gradually increased their pressure. Armstrong had two chances in a row, but Trubin was run over again (57′) and shot high after entering the box (59′).

With Scotland in complete captivity, Che Adams also managed to score with two headers in the same game (62′) The first one hit the crossbar and the second one, poked in, was kicked by Trubin.

the goals came

The goal was a matter of time against a retreating Ukraine who didn’t let a shot between the three posts the entire match. Trubin’s fightback was broken in the 69th minute when John McGinn was keen to take a rebound in the box with a quick move and his low cross shot just wide of the post.

Scotland rallied from 1-0 down and won comfortably thanks to two mirror goals from Lyndon Dykes, who, seconds after replacing Che Adams, headed home a cross after Ryan Fraser’s corner kick at the near post (80′). Three minutes from time, the Queens Park Rangers striker made it 3-0 with another corner from a Newcastle player.
