Fourth Bundesliga player with testicular cancer in 2022

On Hertha’s Dutch forward Jean-Paul Boetius was diagnosed with testicular cancer, as announced on Thursday by the Berlin club in a statement. This is the fourth Bundesliga player to suffer from this disease in 2022.

Boetius, 28, was diagnosed with cancer after a urological examinationor practiced this Wednesday. The attacker arrived at the Berlin team from Mainz last summer.

Boetius’ professional career (capped for the Netherlands once) began at Feyenoordwhere he made his debut in 2012. Basel and Genk were his other teams before he moved to the Bundesliga and Mainz in 2018 from his hometown club in Rotterdam.

“We will be united here, we are the Hertha family”, said the football director of said football, Fredi Bobic. “This news is very bittersweet, but full of hope and confidence that he will recover and return as soon as possible,” he added.

Boetius will undergo surgery. Other Bundesliga players diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022 are Marco Richter (also from Hertha), Timo Baumgartl (Union Berlin) and Sébastien Haller (Borussia Dortmund).

Richter and Baumgartl, recoveredis back on the pitch, meanwhile Haller, who was diagnosed with the tumor in July, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Klaus-Peter Dieckmann, Director of the Center for Testicular Tumors at the Asklepios Clinic in Hamburg. He said that men of professional sports age “are exposed to this disease, it is not surprising that it affects Bundesliga players”. It is not compulsory for Bunesliga players to undergo regular tests to rule out testicular cancer, but clubs such as Union Berlin have already started doing so.
