Alejandro Valverde has a calendar to say goodbye to cycling

After the completion of the World Championship in Wollongong, on Australian soil, the cycling season begins with the final weeks of competition with an eye on Tour of Lombardy that will take place on October 8 and that will put an end to 2022. Until then, several runners are defining what their steps will be after the World Cup.

One of those not in Australia is Alexander Valverde, who after saying goodbye to the Spanish public at the last Vuelta faces his final weeks of competition as a professional cyclist. So the team Movistar has defined this Monday what will be the Murcian’s last stop in his long career, in a final phase of the season where the Spanish team will seek to definitively ensure its permanence among the top teams in the world.

Valverde predicted that he will compete four classics in Italy in the next two weeks. This Thursday will open the last part of its calendar on Cuppa Augustoni which will take place in the Lombardy region. Two days later, on Saturday October 1, he was at the starting line of Giro dell’Emiliaaround Bologna.

Next week is his farewell, already in Lombard land. On Tuesday, October 4, he was in Three Varesian Valleyswhich will be the last preparatory appointment before the final race, the Tour of Lombardy that on Saturday 8 will finish the calendar of ‘monuments’ and the world circuit.

“Only four days, all in Italy, to close a long stage. We will try to do our best and enjoy it to the fullest with the teammates at Movistar”, Valverde expressed about the final stage of his career. Although this year Valverde will not start among the favorites to win the Giro de Lombardía, the second of the Italian monuments is one of the very few pending accounts which remains on the Las Lumbreras cyclist path. Valverde was second in this test in 2013, in 2014 and in 2019 and, if there are no changes, its 2022 edition will be the last definitive bullet of the Murcia corridor.
