Gareth Southgate, England managerexplained why, in his pecking order on the right side of his team, Kieran Trippier went ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The ‘pross’ coach also spoke about why he keeps his faith in Harry Maguire despite the mistakes the Manchester United captain has been making.
Alexander-Arnold is not included in the list England for Monday’s game against Germany. Reece James started at right back and Trippier (currently at Newcastle and ex-Atlético) on the bench. The Liverpool player has only played one game with the national team in 2022, so there is doubt that Southgate will call him up for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“Against Italy, we don’t need to cover the left back. Against Germany, we need Ben Chilwell on the bench, where we also have Kieran (Trippier), who I think is as complete as his game is, is now up front (by Alexander-Arnold),” Southgate said.
The England manager also said that the central defender Harry Maguire needs to play regularly for Manchester United ahead of the World Cup. Maguire has not started United’s last four Premier League games.
“Why did we choose him? (Maguire). Because he is one of the players who gives us the best chance to win. So, really, we should all want a Harry Maguire who plays regularly and with confidence. He has a huge character and that’s why we have to make room for him,” Southgate said.
England will make their World Cup debut against Iran on November 21 in Group B, of which the United States and Wales are also part. The final phase of Qatar 2022 will start on November 20 and end on December 18.
