Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi will this Sunday become the first woman to officiate a Serie A match, Sassuolo-Salernitana, as announced today by the Italian Association of Referees (AIA).
Ferrieri Caputi has already made history in December 2021 by officiating a match involving a Serie A team, a category of which Cagliari was then a member. That was in the second round of the Coppa against Cittadella, from Serie B. He stood out in this match for nullifying three goals in that match
In July, at the age of 31, Ferrieri Caputi was promoted to the Serie A referees’ group and now has the chance to make his debut after being assigned to Sassuolo-Salernitana.
“A Historic Moment”
“This is not just any day, it is a historic moment, I am quite excited,” AIA president Alfredo Trentalange confessed today in a press conference. “Maria Sole will debut in Serie A based on her merit. We don’t give privileges. She deserves it. This is a victory for the whole refereeing community.”
Born in Livorno and a sociologist, Ferrieri Caputi joined the referees’ association in 2007, starting in the provincial and regional leagues before taking charge of Serie D matches in 2015.
your progress
His next step came in 2019 when he refereed two qualifying matches for the Women’s Euro Cup and, the following year, made the jump to Serie C, as well as officiating a Serie B match in between Cittadella and SPAL.
In 2021, Ferrieri Caputi refereed 23 Serie C matches, three Serie B matches and two Coppa Italia matches. FIFA has selected her to participate in the U-17 Women’s World Cup from October 11 to 30 in India.
