The Berlin derby ended this Saturday with a win for Union (1-4) that fed their European aspirations and left Hertha in a bad spot, ultimately in the stands and seriously threatened with relegation.
Felix Magath’s impact seemed to be over for Hertha who, in changing coaches, met again with success after beating Hoffenheim. Now, however, he has suffered his second consecutive defeat.
Hertha won two consecutive home derbies, disbanded by a stronger European award -driven opponent. The visitors returned to the match after half -time with a header from Japan’s Genki Haraguchi after a cross from Sheraldo Becker.
But at the start of the second half, the encounter was balanced when Timo Baumgartl inserted the ball into his own goal after wanting to clear a cross in the area. However, the Union soon regained the lead. In the 53rd minute, Grischa Promel made the most of the aerial game and with a pass by Niko Giesselmann she again defeated Polish Marcel Lotka with a header.
Hertha was destroyed. A quarter of an hour from the end Swiss Urs Fischer’s box sped up and rounded off the win. Sheraldo Becker, after receiving the ball from Andras Schafer, scored a third and with five remaining, Sven Michel signed the fourth.
The victory left the Union on the edge of positions in Europe. It is seventh with the same points as Hoffenheim, which marks the continental zone. Hertha is penultimate though a point behind Stuttgart and safety.
