Sudden storm – shelter under tree: woman killed by lightning

A 62-year-old woman was struck by lightning while hiking in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and was fatally injured. The accident happened on Saturday afternoon, according to police. According to the information, the 62-year-old was traveling with two other women, ages 61 and 65, on a wooded hillside when it began to hail.

The accident happened in Vlotho in East Westphalia. According to the initial police investigation, one of the hikers was fatally struck by lightning as the group sought shelter under a grove of trees. The other two women suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

More than 30 emergency services were on the scene. Police have launched an investigation into the fatal accident.
