Iga Swiatek will not play for Poland in the Billie Jean King Cup finals next month in Glasgow, the world number one announced on Monday, expressing his displeasure with the sport’s governing bodies and their handling of the tournament schedule.
Swiatek helped Poland advance to the final in April, but the tournament will take place from November 8 to 13, just one day after the WTA Finals season finale to be held in Fort Worth, Texas this year.
“I thought about and discussed a lot with my team, but I won’t be able to play in the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow. and it makes me sad“, the Pole said on Instagram. “I’m very sorry, because I play for Poland when I can and I always give my best. Playing in Poland this year was an honor and I hope to do it again at the end of the season.”
“I am disappointed in the fact that the governing bodies of tennis couldn’t come to an agreement on something as simple as the tournament schedulethat gives us just one day to travel the world and change the time zone,” he launched.
While the WTA Finals is organized by the women’s tennis body, the Billie Jean King Cup, formerly known as the Fed Cup, is managed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). “This situation is not safe for our health and can cause harm. I will talk to the WTA and the ITF to try to change somethingadded Swiatek.
“This situation is difficult not only for players like me, but above all for tennis fans who support our sport,” he said.
The Billie Jean King Cup will have 12 teams competing in four round-robin pools of three teams each, with the pool winners advancing to the semi-finals. Poland is in Group D with the Czech Republic and the United States.
