The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will have a stage finish in the 102nd edition of the race in Sabadell, in March 2023a fact that has not happened since 2001. The test, which every year brings together the best teams in the world, will once again fill the streets of the town with a spectacular finish on the stage on Avenida de Francesc Macià.
The last time Sabadell was present at the Volta was in the 2001 editionwhen the city of Valles accepted the start of a stage, a team time trial in which the ONCE team, a modality specialist, won.
However, the history between Sabadell and Volta was born earlier. Particularly with the stage in 1946 with the success of Miquel Gual. Since, the aforementioned town has hosted the start or finish of a season ten times.
For history remains the victory in 1971 of the legendary Luis Ocaña, who took victory in an individual time trial to conquer the Volta of that edition.
The president of Volta Catalunya, Rubèn Peris, commented that it was “an anomaly” that the Volta was not present in Sabadell in the last two decades.
“The return is a great way to bring cycling to the streets and to celebrate an event as important as the centenary of the Unió Ciclista Sabadell”, he recalled.
The 102nd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will be held from March 20 to 26, 2023 and 18 teams of the highest category in the world (UCI WorldTeams), as well as seven invited teams from the second (UCI ProTeams), will participate in it.
The final winner was the Colombian Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe)joined on the podium by the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (INEOS) and the Portuguese Joao Almeida (UAE Team).
