Pepe was injured and the Qatar World Cup was seen to be in jeopardy

Date:

Pepe, a Portuguese-Brazilian central defender from Porto, has suffered a serious injury to his knee and will be out indefinitely, as announced today by the ‘dragons’ coach, Sergio Conceição.

In the preview of Saturday’s game against Portimonense in the Portuguese First League, Conceição indicated that the former Real Madrid player “sprained his knee seriously and will not be able to participate in this game or the next games”. Pepe played 90 minutes on Tuesday in Porto’s Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen (2-0).

Porto’s coach did not advance the period of Pepe’s absence, 39, so it is uncertain whether he will recover in time for the match against Atlético de Madrid in the Champions League on November 1 or whether he will be ready to represent Portugal at the World Cup in Qatar starting on 20th November.

Porto later confirmed that Pepe had injured the internal collateral ligament of his left knee, although they did not specify how long he would be sidelined.

Képler Laverán Lima, known as Pepe, was born in Brazil but became a Portuguese national and has been playing for the national team since 2007.

Porto are currently second in the First League with 19 points, three behind leaders Benfica. And in group B of the Champions League, he has 3 points, tied with Atlético and Bayer Leverkusen, behind the leader of Club Brujas, who has 9.
