Carlos Sainz, Suzuka victim: ‘A difficult and disappointing Sunday’

Date:

The Madrid man crashed as soon as the Japanese GP started and was the first to suffer from the difficult race conditions

Carlos Sainz did not have to wait that hour and a half between the red flag and the resumption of the race, as he was the cause of the stoppage. As soon as he started, and despite a more or less decent start, he hit the wall due to aquaplaning which sent him against the wall. He can be thankful he was left alone in that, as it was a heavy blow, in zero visibility conditions and with the other cars a few yards away in front of him.

His disappointment was noticeable, but also resigned. «A difficult and disappointing Sunday. The decision to start the race with medium or extremely wet tires was a very fair one, but honestly the visibility would have been zero and that was the biggest limitation. I tried to get out of the Pérez water curtain and I ended up in a big puddle, I’m aquaplaning and I haven’t been able to do anything to control the car,” he explained about the blow.

From there it’s all over. Sainz went to the box and followed the course of the race from the wall, aware that he could have caught something under these conditions. “My only concern at the time was not to get hit. I was in a dangerous position in the middle of the track and I knew the other drivers couldn’t see me. Fortunately for everyone, nothing worse happened today. Now we’re going to reset and try again in the United States,” he promised to settle.

Fernando Alonso, like the rest of the drivers, was highly critical of the FIA for the crane incident. Both he and Pierre Gasly, who was eventually sanctioned, Lando Norris, Guanyu Zhou, Lewis Hamilton or the recently proclaimed two-time world champion Max Verstappen want it cleared up properly.

“We need to talk to the FIA. After 2014 and the Jules accident, the whole system has changed a little bit to prevent that from ever happening again, and today we saw a tow truck on the track… It makes no matter if there is a safety car, yellow flag or red flag the crane on the track should not go out until the cars are in the pit lane otherwise the race will be neutralized we will try to help the FIA and watch how it happened and who gave the order to understand it,” Alonso said constructively.

As for his career, the Spaniard was pleased with the fight, although he admitted some confusion as well. “We didn’t know if it was the last lap of the race, they warned me in the last corner. I think it was the same for everyone, but in the car there was a bit of chaos within the team and I was not completely satisfied,” he said, before giving the Federation a certain boost again. it’s been a difficult Sunday. Now Max is world champion, not even twenty minutes ago… Well, it kind of sums up what happened on Sunday,” he commented with his usual sarcasm.
