The Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas and the Peruvian Kimberly Garciatriple jump and 20 km walk world champion, respectively, were chosen by World Athleticsalong with eight others, candidates to be recognized with the trophy for the world athlete of the year 2022. Both will compete for the award in a popular poll that started this week online, open to fans from around the world until 31 October and where the five finalists will appear.
The performance at the Eugen Outdoor World Championshipse (Oregon, USA) and in the internal courts of Belgrade, as well as a one-day athletic meeting was decisive in the selection of candidates. The winner will be announced in early December.
The ten finalists are, in alphabetical order:
– Tobi Amusan (Nigeria). World, African, Diamond League and Commonwealth champion in the 100m hurdles. He broke the world record with a time of 12.12.
– Chase Ealey (USA). World weight champion in open air and runner-up in indoor track. Diamond League champion and best world record of the year with 20.51.
– Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaica). 100m world champion for the fifth time. Champion of the Diamond League. Best world record of the year with 10.62 and seven records under 10.70 this season.
– Kimberly Garcia (Peru). World champion of the 20 km march, Peru’s first gold in the history of the World Cups, and 35 km. Bronze at the World Championship for walking teams.
– Shericka Jackson (Jamaica). World and Diamond League champion in 200 m. Best world record of the year with 21.45, the second best in history.
– Faith Kipyegon (Kenya). World and Diamond League champion in the 1,500. Best world record of the year with 3:50.37, three tenths of the world record.
– Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine). World champion in indoor height and runner-up in open air. European Champion and best world record of the year with 2.05.
– Sidney McLaughlin (United States). World champion of 400m hurdles and 4×400. he broke the 400 m hurdles world record with 51.41 at the national championships and did it again at the World Championships with 50.68.
– Shaunae Miller-Uibo (Bahamas). World champion in 400 m outdoor and indoor track.
– Yulimar Rojas (Venezuela). Triple jump world champion outdoors and indoors. Champion of the Diamond League. He broke his world record with 15.74.
