Golf fans on social media were divided after Shane Lowry apparently spoke selective words to his staff member Brian “Beau” Martin – in the third round of the Masters in August after a poor shot at the National.
Lowry burned from the fifth hole to the thirteenth, but seemed less impressed by the can yard calculations, as he seemed to feel a critical distance left as he approached the green.
Martin, who is originally from Ardglass, is in Co Down, and the couple have had a great relationship with this course over the years.
Cameras and microphones focused on Oval’s man, who made his voice heard: “He didn’t leave me any shots.
“What a beautiful thing. Well done, good boo. It was only 30 yards. I perfect it.”
To add to his frustration, he then fired three shots of Boog from 47 feet as he chased after fugitive leader Scott Scheffler with eight shots.
Some fans on social media criticized the outbursts, tweeting: “As much as I love watching Shane Lowry, his behavior at the age of 13 was depraved.”
Another commented, “It’s easy to tell from here, but Laurie really needed to stop the frustration and play the next take. He was still playing after the first turn. There’s a long time to go, but it’s tough.”
But others chose to see the funny side, with one saying, “Non-Irish people think what Laurie said in her shot is offensive and funny. # gentlemen . ”
Lowry is currently ranked 35th in the world and is chasing his first win over Royal Porto since winning the 2019 Open.
Rory McIlroy is currently in the top ten in August when chasing the world’s No. 1 Sheffler.
