Rory McIlroy after the end of the dream at the Masters: That’s as happy as I was on the golf course

Date:

Rory McIlroy vowed to continue winning the Masters title and end his Grand Slam career after finishing second at the exciting Augusta National Championship.

McIlroy came out of the dugout eighteenth and finished 64th with six birds and an eagle, which equated to the lowest final round in championship history.

The 32-year-old finished off three shots from world number one Scott Scheffler, who finished 18th with an impressive performance four times and won his first major title with his fourth win in the last six matches.

“That’s what you dream about, isn’t it?” “You’re dreaming of getting to a location,” McIlroy said after a fun party at 18th Green with his partner Colin Morikawa, who also came out of the same bunker.

“I wasn’t close enough to driving (but) playing as well as I did and then I finished like this, I mean, it’s amazing.

“This tournament has never ceased to be a surprise and is as exhilarating as I have ever been on a golf course.

“It was cool. I had never heard a roar like an eighteenth roar. It was really cold.

“I treated him very well and I can’t ask for more of myself. I went out today and got the best result in August and that will be the best result for me.

“Maybe it’s not good enough, but I’ll be back next year and I’ll keep trying.”

World number one Schaeffler revealed that he was “crying like a child” ahead of the final round of the Masters Tournament, after winning his first major title.

Scheffler took the lead with three shots after 54 holes and finished Augusta National with 71 and finished with 10, with McIlroy three shots, despite missing the 72nd hole by four shots.

“I was so busy I didn’t know I was ready for it,” Scheffler said. “I cried like a baby this morning.

“I dreamed of playing in this tournament, I was amazed when I got my first email invite. I love this place and if you were to pick a tournament to win, you would.

“I don’t know what to say, to be honest, I am grateful to be in this position. I don’t think anything has sunk, my head is spinning again.”
