Robert Baptist surrendered this Thursday to Round of 16 of the ATP 250 in Naples before the American MacKenzie McDonaldwhich was won in two sets, by double 6-4, after more than an hour and a half.
Bautista, seeded third in the tournament, sprung a surprise non-winner against a McDonald who, though very solid, made the most of his serve, totaling six aces.
The Spaniard started well, breaking down the American and putting himself into an initial two-zero which seemed to indicate the way the game was going. However, McDonald was able to recover and break Bautista twice, putting the game back on track with a 5-3 This is the prelude to 6-4 which closed out the first set.
The second stake is almost identical. Bautista managed to break first and go up 3-1, but his American rival, number 74 in the ranking, again showed composure and resistance in equal parts as he found himself at the bottom of the scoreboard and, after a fresh exercise in poise, he composed himself by breaking Bautista’s serve twice more and sealing their place in the quarterfinals with another 6-4.
In the next round, McDonald will face the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (109), Argentine executioner Sebastián Báez, in a duel between two players that knocked out two of the Italian tournament favorites.
