Aston Villa hit Steven Gerrard

Date:

Steven Gerrard has stepped down as manager of Aston Villa tonight. Just minutes after the Birmingham team was beaten 3-0 by Fulham, the board decided to sack the English coach, who took over in November 2021 when he left the Scottish Rangers bench and signed a contract until 2025.

After producing a promising first season in charge of Aston Villa to finish in 14th place, ten points off the relegation places, this season Gerrard has barely managed two wins in 11 Premier games played and the ‘villains’ They occupied the 17th place, one of the relegation places.

In fact, Villa have the same points (9) and goal difference (-9) as Wolves but they are not third last in having more goals. The emphatic defeat against Fulham meant the end of Gerrard’s spell, which has been in question for weeks, on the bench at Villa Park after going four days in a row without a win.

He signed Coutinho and Villa blamed his downfall

Gerrard, whose record is 13 wins from 40 games in his eleven months in charge, was instrumental in the January signing of Philippe Coutinho, his former partner during his time as a player at Liverpool. The Brazilian first arrived on loan from Barça and has been owned since the summer for 20 million euros.

Coutinho has started to perform at a high level but this season he has not scored a goal or provided a single assist. A drop in performance that explains Aston Villa’s dire situation and the resulting dismissal of Gerrard.
