Investation in Lufthansa – Fainting in the cockpit: Jet flew without pilots

Date:

During a Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Sevilla, the co-pilot suddenly passed all the people when the captain was on the toilet. The machine then flew to the steering machine for about ten minutes.

This is the result of a research report by the Spanish authority of the insurance investigation for the incident of 17 February 2024. According to the machine, the machine could fly stably, although the unconscious co-pilot was unintentionally operated. The captain managed to open the security door to the cockpit about ten minutes later. He had only completed the training for such emergencies the month before.

After five times, the captain entered the normal doorway code in vain, which activates a buzzon so that the co-pilot releases the doorway. These security doors cannot be opened by violence. With the emergency code, the door opens without any intervention from the cockpit.

Emergency landing in Madrid
The captain finally found the co-pilot pale and heavily sweaty. He also made strange movements. The captain therefore decided to land in Madrid. The machine with 199 passengers, passengers and six crew members landed safely. The co-pilot was taken to a hospital. According to the report, the person concerned (38) had no proof of previous illness.

The incident raises the question of whether airlines should again introduce a continuous double line -up of the cockpit.
