Sad news from Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo: As the zoo announced via Facebook on Tuesday, vets had to put down nine-year-old polar bear lady “Nora”.
The reason the zoo gave was acute colic, which the polar bear had contracted the week before. Surgery was then necessary, from which “Nora” of course never recovered. “Despite the tireless efforts of the entire team and the caring care of the animal, her condition deteriorated dramatically over the following days,” the zoo said. “Ultimately, vets and experts had to decide to euthanize her because there was no chance of a cure.”
“Nora” had produced offspring in Schönbrunn in 2019 – with little “Finja”. This one is now fully grown. As the zoo has explained, the young bear and her father “Ranzo” are safe and sound and can be seen in their enclosure in Schönbrunn.
