In the US, the baby food supply crisis is coming to a head. According to the US Presidential Office, US President Joe Biden is now resorting to a gun law to remedy bottlenecks in supermarkets. The application of the Defense Production Act aims to give manufacturers priority in sourcing ingredients needed to increase inventories, the White House said Thursday.
Biden also instructed US authorities to use DoD commercial planes to quickly deliver additional infant formula from other countries to the United States. “Bypassing regular air routes will accelerate the import and distribution of infant formula and provide a short-term solution until manufacturers can ramp up production further,” the White House said.
Baby food shelves in the US remained partially empty after US market leader Abbott recalled its products in February following complaints of bacterial infections. Leading European manufacturers Reckitt Benckiser and Nestle announced on Tuesday that they will be exporting more baby food to the United States than usual.
