At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which starts on Sunday, the air force of the Austrian armed forces will once again increase security in Austrian airspace. More than 1,000 soldiers and 20 aircraft, 10 fixed-wing aircraft and 10 helicopters will be deployed between May 22 and 26. Air traffic over parts of Vorarlberg and Tyrol is restricted.
The holiday resort of Davos in eastern Switzerland is only a few kilometers from the Austrian border. Due to the topographical conditions, the military must be called in to effectively protect the site from airspace violations from the north or east. As in previous years, Switzerland has therefore requested the armed forces to step up surveillance of Austrian airspace in the affected area.
“With the airspace security operation ‘Dädalus 22’, the Austrian Air Force, in collaboration with their Swiss comrades, is demonstrating the high level of competence in carrying out this cross-border mission,” Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) said on Thursday.
Joint airspace surveillance agreement
Switzerland and Austria are also collaborating in other areas of airspace surveillance, the Defense Ministry announced on Thursday. An agreement in force since 2019 allows suspected aircraft to be intercepted or received on the territory of the neighboring country.
However, the use of weapons in adjacent airspace is not permitted. Similar cross-border police cooperation also exists in the field. This allows prosecutions to be extended to adjacent national territory.
