They are seen as an environmentally friendly alternative to their plastic counterparts, but a recent study concludes that straws made from paper and other supposedly sustainable materials may not be better for the environment than previously thought. They are a burden to them – and to the health of us humans.
For their recently published study in the journal “Food Additives & Contaminants,” Thimo Groffen, an environmental scientist at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, and his team examined “the widest possible range” of straws available on the market for 29 different so-called per- and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds, PFAS for short. The total of 39 straws of different origins were made of paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel and plastic and were each tested in two rounds for the questionable, partly undiscovered substances (see below). The results are alarming.
