After weeks of heightened activity, the Popocatepetl volcano in central Mexico has calmed down. Alarm level reduced from Yellow 3 to Yellow 2.
On May 21, the alert level was raised due to violent explosions. However, it was not necessary to evacuate the surrounding villages.
However, around the almost 5400 meter high mountain, which is located 85 kilometers southeast of Mexico City, there is another twelve kilometer wide exclusion zone. Mild to moderate explosions and eruptions of ash and hot rock are still expected.
Popocatepetl (‘Smoking Mountain’) is one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico. It is located on the border of the states of Mexico, Puebla and Morelos. The recent eruption caused heavy ash rain in surrounding towns and villages.
