According to a study, almost every tenth person infected with corona in Germany goes to work despite illness. Nine percent of those who are sick show up with a mild course and despite positive tests in the office or in the company, according to a study “Working 2022” by the health insurance company Pronova BKK.
17 percent work from home, another 17 percent stay at home for a few days until the worst symptoms have passed. 8 percent then decide what happens at work. 33 percent of those surveyed stay at home with a mild course of the coronavirus until they are healthy again. 16 percent of those surveyed had not yet contracted the coronavirus.
Only 28 percent consistently stay at home
In September, 1,200 employees were questioned. In general, according to the German study, the majority of all employees go to work despite illness. In addition to the nine percent who suffer from corona, another 20 percent come to work with contagious infections. Only 28 percent of Germans consistently stay home when they are sick and not working.
Most often, employees go to the company despite back pain (49 percent), 38 percent despite allergies, as the study goes on to say. A third of employees with psychosomatic or psychological complaints appear at work.
“unacceptable risk”
From the point of view of medical professionals, working despite illness is questionable, especially in the case of contagious infections. “Anyone who does not recover in peace runs the risk that viral diseases also attack the heart or other organs or that the symptoms suppressed by medication get worse,” says Gerd Herold, consultant physician at Pronova BKK. “In addition, employees can become infected.” For example, being in the office despite a positive corona test is “an unreasonable risk”.
