Former GDR head of state and party leader Egon Krenz presented the first part of his memoirs on Thursday evening. At an event in the Berlin home of the former “New Germany”, the 85-year-old said that in his books and appearances he continued to defend the GDR so that it is “remembered as it was and not as our political opponents want us to be.” want to dictate”.
In the fall of 1989, Krenz succeeded Erich Honecker as head of state and party leader in the GDR for 50 days before resigning during the peaceful revolution. In August 1997, he was sentenced by the Berlin regional court to six years and six months in prison for manslaughter for fatal shots fired at the inner German border, which he began in 1999.
“The West was responsible for the division of Germany”
Krenz said the West was responsible for the division of Germany. The GDR was not established until after the founding of the Federal Republic, and the Warsaw Pact was not established until after the “NATO Aggressive Pact”. Therefore, he believes “that the GDR cannot be blamed solely on the German division, not at all”.
Attacks on the German Government
Krenz attacked the current federal government’s decision to put the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline on hold. Whether Germany will get through the winter with enough gas is a political decision. If you start using Nord Stream 2 and lift the sanctions against Russia, “I don’t think you’re doing any harm to the Germans, but then that’s a sign, also a sign to Russia, that you want to go back to cooperation and negotiations.”
The first part of his memoir, entitled “Departure and Rise”, deals with the time between Krenz’s birth in 1937 and 1973.
