Our neighboring country Switzerland was one of the last countries in Western Europe to introduce ‘marriage for all’ on Friday. It is now legal for people of the same sex to marry each other. Opponents of the bill had forced a referendum last year. This ended in September with a 64.1 percent approval of “marriage for all”.
There was a rush of gay and lesbian couples on the first day in Zurich, among other places, with more than two dozen ceremonies. Among them were men and women who already had a registered partnership and wanted to change their status.
Swiss Post issued a special stamp when it came into effect. It shows 30 balloons tied together to form a large rainbow-colored heart that rises to the sky. Attached to the balloons are four cards that say “Yes” in all four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh.
Same-sex marriage has been possible in Austria since January 1, 2019.
